Three polio cases surface in Pakistan 


PESHAWAR, February 26, 2015: Three more polio cases have been reported in the country taking the toll of polio cases to 13 for the year 2015.

Talking to The Oslo Times, Dr Imtiaz Ali Shah, a technical focal person for Polio Eradiation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said that polio cases have been reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Balochistan.

He said that an 18-month-old girl named Sabeeha,a resident of UC Amankhel in Tank, district of KP has been tested positive for polio. In Bara, Khyber Agency an 8-month-old boy, Waqif and in Qilla Abdullah, Balochistan and two-year-old girl named Bibi Haneefa tested Polio positive.

With the emergence of new polio cases, the number of polio cases in the country has reached to 13 this year.

Sources in the health department said that out of the 13 polio cases, six have been reported from KP, five from tribal belt and one each from Sindh and Balochistan provinces.

Last year a total of 306 cases of polio were reported in Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that polio virus has been eliminated from the World except from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Despite vigorous attempts and international support Islamabad facing hiccups in curbing polio, the crippling disease.
