Taliban appoints Mullah Akhtar Mansour as new supreme leader
July 30, Kabul: A source close to Taliban said that they have appointed the Mullah Akhtar Mansour as the new Afghan Taliban supreme leader, a day after the news of Afghan Taliban supremo Mullah Omar death on Wednesday.
The move is likely to divide the militants, and that many senior figures opposed the appointment, sources said.
The Taliban have not yet officially announced the new leader. However, the Taliban leader said the formal announcement is likely to be made shortly.
The peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, due on Friday, have been postponed, Pakistan said.
