Life imprisonment for 153 Chinese in Myanmar
July 23, Beijing: A Myanmar court in Kachin state on Wednesday has sentenced 153 Chinese nationals to life in prison for illegal logging.
Two other Chinese minors were given prison terms of 10 years each for the same offense, while a woman in the group received an additional 15 years on a drug charge.
The group was arrested in January during a military operation to crack down on illegal logging.
China has expressed concern about the severity of the sentences.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China had repeatedly raised the issue with Myanmar since the arrests of the group. China has asking Myanmar to “consider the actual situation of those loggers and deal with the matter in a lawful, reasonable and sensible way,” China‘s Xinhua state news agency quoted Lu as saying.
