Libya court sentences Gaddafi son to death over war crimes
July 28, Tripoli: A court in Libya has sentenced a son of Col Moammar Gadhafi, Saif al-Islam to death in absentia on Tuesday over killings during the country’s 2011 uprising.
The Tripoli court that sentenced Seif al-Islam, who is being held by a militia that refuses to hand him over to the central government, also sentenced to death eight others, including former Libyan spy chief Abdullah al-Senoussi.
It was unclear whether the sentences would be carried out. More than 30 close associates of the deposed leader were on trial, accused of suppressing protests during the uprising.
Al-Islam was not present in court and gave evidence via video link.
