Japanese Shinkansen bullet train hit by fire

Japan

June 30, Tokyo: At least two people have been seriously injured after a fire broke out on a Shinkansen bullet train in Japan when a passenger poured oil over him or herself starting the fire, a Japan Rail spokesman has said.

The train was going from Tokyo to Osaka when the incident occurred, near Odawara city.

Local media said the incident took place at 11:30am local time while the train was between Yokohama and Odawara. Two people had suffered cardiac arrests and other passengers have also been injured, local media cited the Odawara fire department as saying.

Bullet trains, which have a good safety history, travel at speeds of up to 320km/h (198 mph).
