Iraq: 10 dead in suicide attack

Iraq suicide blast on Dec 24

Baghdad, Dec 29: At least 10 mourners were killed and other 20 were wounded when a suicide bomber struck a funeral north of Baghdad on Monday.

Reports said that the bomber blew himself up inside a funeral tent in a farming area outside the mainly Sunni town of Taji, about 22 kilometers north of Baghdad.

The funeral was for the father of two members of pro-government militias, known as Sahwa or Awakening Councils.

The Sahwa were formed at the height of Iraq‘s sectarian conflict in 2006 and 2007, and allied with US troops against al-Qaida in Iraq, a precursor to the Islamic State (IS) extremist group.

No one has claimed responsibility for attack, but it bore the hallmarks of the IS group, which frequently targets Sunnis allied with the Shiite-led government. The extremist group has captured large swaths of western and northern Iraq since it started attacks earlier this year.

According to the latest statistics of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), some 11,484 Iraqis were killed and 17,235 others injured due to the terrorist attacks in Iraq during 2014.
