700 Libyan migrants feared dead in Mediterranean shipwreckage
19 April, Rome: Italian coastguard retrieves 28 survivors so far, and at least 20 bodies, according to the interior ministry, after boat capsized some 60 miles off Libyan coast. There rescue operation is ongoing to rescue hundreds of those (Libyans) who were aboard. The boat capsized in the Mediterranean at midnight local time. The passengers had been in the chilly water for hours.
Scores of bodies were seen floating in the waters particularly children are among the dead. The migrants between 500-700 individuals, so far 28 of them have been rescued in the incident. The rescue teams are striving hard to save those struggling for life, however the typhoon is becoming a biggest hurdle in rescue efforts. One of the survivors said the vessel overturned because the migrants shifted to one side when they saw another boat approaching towards them. “They hoped they would be salvaged however when they ran towards one side, the boat capsized,” he said.
Italian coast have witnessed at least 20,000 traveler this year, the International Organization for Migration estimates.
